Take Me to 5Church
Having been in Atlanta a little over a year now, 5Church has been positioning itself as a prime venue for your swankiest fête. Located in Atlanta's Midtown neighborhood, the space displays unique artwork and The Art of War is beautifully painted on the ceiling. The New American restaurant is decorated in dark leather and tufted banquet seating that compliments the white bar area.
My first encounter with 5Church was for their one year anniversary party. This was pre plant-based diet life, so I ordered the grilled salmon with potato gnocchi and citrus beurre blanc. Gnocchi is one of those items that I must order when I see it on the menu ... like when I see lemongrass, blueberry, or elderflower in a cocktail. My other half ordered the chicken roulade, and they've since added mushrooms and spinach to the dish. When I tell you that this was the most succulent chicken I've EVER had at a restaurant! I'm quite skilled at cooking chicken to the perfect temp, and being a busy night for them, I was thoroughly impressed by their execution. The goat cheese provided the perfect amount of creaminess for the juicy chicken, and the barley lent the dish some extra chewiness. The entree tasted like it had white wine added to it, which added a pleasant layer of flavor and aroma. All of the components complimented each other perfectly. The portion sizes were more than enough for dinner and lunch the next day. P.S. the food was even better the next day after the flavors marinated over night!
My second experience with 5Church I decided to take a 20% day (let's be real ... anytime I see seafood, I'm ordering seafood) to compare their wasabi crusted ahi tuna and smoked gouda mac & cheese to another local restaurant that never disappoints in crafting the same items. My companion ordered the chicken roulade at my recommendation, and he also raved that it was a great choice. My choices left something to be desired due to a lack of flavor, but the service was great. Both this and my previous experience I had great, attentive service. We also ordered the grilled peach flatbread with caramelized onions as starter that was delicioso with my Rosé. Unfortunately this savory sweet item was a seasonal treat. It's been replaced by a fig flatbread, and a lovely couple sitting next to me at the bar on my third visit said that it was fantastic. I look forward to trying it next time not that I've been convinced to cheat on the peach version.
I heard they have a happy hour, so of course I had to see what that was about. Nibbles + sips from the happy hour menu range from $5-$8, and I honestly can't say there was anything we didn't like. We drank the robust Square Plum & Level Cabernet-Sauvignon blend that complimented every bite of PEI mussels, herb and cheese flatbread, and ahi tuna poke. The bane of my vegan journey has been giving up cheese, and the herb and cheese flatbread had globs of mozzarella cheese on its six slices that were finger-licking good. Please note that the ahi tuna poke has recently changed due to Midtown Restaurant week. It's more like an inverted sushi roll than the mound of ahi tuna of its predecessor. It was flavored to perfection, as I didn't feel the need to ask for wasabi nor soy sauce. If you love charcuterie as much as I used to, theirs will not disappoint. It contained 2 different types of cold cooked meats and cheese with an assortment of other items, however the options change daily.
I prefer to sit at the bar anytime I dine out, and while the service isn't the most attentive at the bar, it gets better as you chat up the bartenders. There has almost always been live performers when I go, which adds to the upscale ambience and brownie points for that first date. If you remember to head upstairs, you'll be greeted with two additional bars, a "rooftop patio", and grand views of Midtown. Don't tell them I told you, but I hear they have $3 ($15 carafe) mimosas for brunch. I highly recommend relishing in this global warming induced extended summer by grabbing a table on their patio for your next church service ... I mean brunch.
