Four Ways To Celebrate Galentine's Day

Grab your gal pals because this Tuesday marks nonofficial holiday for any fabulous ladies celebrating other fabulous ladies for Galentine's Day.

Since when was Galentine's Day a thing you ask?

Emmy-nominated comedic sitcom Parks and Recreation coined the term in 2010, when Leslie (Amy Poehler) threw her annual "Galentine's Day" party for best friends day. This concept was something my friends and I incorporated often in our early twenties, but we didn't feel the need to label it.

Never feeling as if someone needed to take us out on Valentine's Day, we would secure our reservations for said holiday and take ourselves out on the town. I lived for giggling our way to our seats as we bypassed naive date-nighters who didn't guarantee a prompt seating for the evening.

It's Atlanta, and please believe me when I tell you that every restaurant will be booked and slammed the weekend before, the day of, and the weekend after Valentine’s Day.

I'll be damned if I don't make a reservation for a regular outing, let alone on a busy holiday weekend. Where they do that at?

I've even cancelled Valentine's Day plans on a date that thought we were going to wing it. Well he was winging it solo dolo that night because I refuse to waste my time on any (wo)man that doesn't take the time to plan these things in advance. Once again I spent the weekend with a gal pal. Thanks Taryn!

No need to worry ladies. I've got you covered this Galentine's Day weekend with four experiences in Atlanta to get your squad inspired to paint the town pink.

Dance until you can no longer feel your feet at Afro Soca Love

Feel the rhythm! Feel the rhyme! Get on up, it’s wining time! Experience international performers DJs and dance the night away to soca music. North America’s largest Afro-Caribbean celebration of love merges Afrobeats and Carnival to bring you Afro Soca Love at The Warehouse. You can also live by culture and lead by love with them in D.C., Oakland, and Los Angeles. Hit ‘em with that slow wine gyal!

Have Galentine’s Day brunch at Hampton + Hudson

After wining to Afro Soca music all night, you’ll need to refuel. As most know, going to brunch is a religion (we’ll all really rejoice when Georgia passes this brunch bill), and Hampton + Hudson has you covered this pre-Galentine’s (Sun)Day. Indulge in a delectable waffle board and wash it all down with the juiciest bellinis this side of The Beltline. I recommend arriving around noon before the crowds swarm for the 12:30 pours.

See an independent film during the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival

The 18th annual Atlanta Jewish Film Festival is celebrating all that life has to offer by bringing a compelling mix of stories about people and cultures across the globe.

I saw LGBTQ film The Cakemaker, which beautifully depicted life in Israel and the oft paralyzing desire for human connection when grappling with loss.

On My Way Out: The Secret Life of Nani and Popi is another LGBT film that your squad can sit in to recover from all of those tasty bellinis you sipped responsibly at Hampton + Hudson.

Support queer and trans artists of color at Art Funds Art Tour

With the Trump administration threatening to cut funding for the National Endowment for the Arts, it will become increasingly vital for the LGBTQ community to play a role in directly supporting local artists.

Sean Desiree of bell’s roar created the initiative Art Funds Art Tour in an effort to reinforce solidarity through music and create affirming spaces for queer and trans people of color. If you miss the tour in Atlanta, you can also catch it in Albany, NYC, Philadelphia, Baltimore, or Durham. The tour will make its stop at Mammal Gallery this Monday from 7-10 PM.
