Gluten Free Whiskey?!
Dalton Distillery is nestled in Dalton, GA, and I had the pleasure of meeting the Butler family at the Whiskies of the World expo. Dalton Distillery's first sunflower spirit, TazaRay Sunflower Spirits, is uniquely in its own lane as a gluten free spirit (whiskey). They use malted sunflower seeds and malted corn in their distilling process, whereas traditional whiskies use wheat, barley, oats, & other grains in their distilling process. Bloat-free sipping? TazaRay (45% abv) is aged in bourbon barrels, producing a light cinnamon flavor that would be a great alternative for fireball and flavored spirit advocates. Get adventurous by experimenting with adding TazaRay to your Kentucky Mule, whiskey sour, or sipping it on the rocks. TazaRay was definitely one of the faves of the group at the expo. I highly recommend this expression for novices to the whiskey game. They had me at gluten free because gluten leaves me uncomfortably bloated, and no one's trying to hold it in all night.
"WHISKEY. IT MAY NOT BE THE ANSWER, BUT IT WILL HELP YOU FORGET THE QUESTION." -RAYMOND BUTLER
Their TazaRay Red (45% abv) expression is aged in used red wine barrels, imparting a more robust flavor that would be great sipped neat or on the rocks. Get adventurous with this expression by adding it to your Manhattan or Old Fashioned.
Check out their recipes to get more inspiration on how to incorporate these delicious whiskies into your cocktail rotation. Pro tip: If TazaRay isn't stocked at your local spirits store, ask the clerk if they can obtain it for you.
