Polyamory: A New Way to Love

Is polyamory an excuse to manipulate women into casual sex?

Most of us grew up believing that you find “the one”, settle into a devoted, monogamous relationship, and live happily ever in the suburbs with your two kids and dog, Bailey. Let’s face it. Monogamy is not for everyone, and the narrative is quickly changing on what constitutes happily ever after. Poly couples across the country are opening up about the growing nonmonogamous community of triad relationships.

Many people seeking polyamory - the capacity to be in love or romantically involved with more than one person at the same time - are intrigued by the idea of cultivating meaningful, ongoing relationships with the potential to fall in love.

Women of color are debunking myths around the poly lifestyle being for commitment-phobes or all about orgies. They are thrusting polyamory into mainstream pop culture through polyamorous movies like Professor Marston and the Wonder Women (directed by the same queer WoC behind The L Word, Hung, and True Blood) and Janelle Monáe's Dirty Computer [Emotion Picture].

Atlanta Pride in collaboration with Sexual Liberation Collective is presenting the basics of polyamory by providing perspectives on how queer people navigate their polyamorous lives and giving strategies about how to map out your own desirable relationship constellation. If you're interested in learning more about polyamourous couples or are asking yourself, "am I polyamorous?", Goodreads has over seventy polyamory books for your educational pleasure.

Sexual Liberation Collective will provide additional resources for future conversations to advance polyamorous principles. If you have any questions, feel free to email: kimble@atlantapride.org. The event starts at 7:00 P.M. at the Phillip Rush Center.
